Newroz, the Freedom and resistance fest of the Kurdish people and other peoples in the Middle East, which is celebrated in 21st of March, continued also this year with being a nightmare for the fascist Turkish state. Turkish state's nightmares of Newroz started weeks ago. Because Kurdish people stand up at every Newroz Day, they burn the fire of rebellion against colonialist Turkish state -the fire of rebellion that was set by blacksmith Kawa against oppressor Dahhaq. Because, Newroz is a day where workers and labourers from Kurdish and Turkish nations and other national minorities become brothers, cry out altogether their demand of freedom and they sing and dance together. At the celebrations of Newroz in Turkey and Northern Kurdistan where 2 million people participated despite all the bans, repression an attacks of the state, the Kurdish people defended their culture with the Kurdish national colours, they expressed their demands for freedom and they defended Ocalan who has been being kept under isolation at Imrali Island for 8 years.
While the Newroz Day was coming closer, meetings and summits began to be hold at the top of the state. Being aware of the fact that it could not hinder the Newroz celebrations by banning them or distorting the meaning of the day through state's ceremonies, the fascist dictatorship tried to hinder the Newroz through different impositions. By imposing that the celebrations of Newroz should take place during the weekdays and not at the weekend, it thought that there would be a lower participation on the working days. On the other side, it increased its raids and the arrests against DTP (Party of Democratic Society) that it has been carrying out continuously at last months. Before Newroz in the months of February and March, the provincial branches of DTP in Diyarbakir, Van, Siirt, Sirnak, Mardin, Batman, Kars, Istanbul, Ankara, Elazig, Sanliurfa, Gazi antep, Adana, Mus, Tunceli, Izmir, Kocaeli and Hakkari and the district branches in these provinces were raided; 254 DTP leaders were arrested and 72 of them were sent to prison. Together with the arrests in the period after Newroz, the number of the arrested members of DTP rose to 250. The two presidents of DTP and some local administrators affiliated to it received sentences. The daily newspaper Gundem, voice of Kurdish people, and the newspaper Azadiya Welat, which is published in Kurdish language, were banned for several weeks. Each issue of the newspaper Guncel, which began to be published recently, is being confiscated and its publication is being hindered. Many ESP activists were arrested during their preparation activities for Newroz.
All these attacks and the hindrances of the fascist Turkish state were not able to impede that the Newroz Day of 2007 was celebrated with huge actions and demonstrations in every part of Turkey and Northern Kurdistan. The celebrations started days ago, and reached to the top with the demonstrations on 21 March that were held in Amed, Sirnak and Istanbul at first and also in many other cities. Although the demonstration took place 10 km outside the city, hundreds thousands participated in the celebrations and cried out the demands of the Kurdish people for freedom, equality and brotherhood. In Amed, where there had been issued an unlimited authority of 5 days for the police, tens of observes coming as a delegation from different countries and many journalists also observed the demonstration. In Istanbul, although it was celebrated on the midweek as a result of the impositions of the state, more than hundred thousand people came together and cried out as one single mouth the fraternity of the peoples. Kurdish worker and labours, who crowded the Newroz place, showed with their language, which is tried to ban, national colours that they will not bow the neck (submit). Police hindered in some district buses of people who wanted to participate in the Newroz. In Van, Batman and Sirnak, where 150 thousands were participated in each city, were excitingly spoken about demands of freedom, equality and brotherhood. Police, who attacked the Newroz celebration in many places, arrested hundreds of people. Expressing freely its language and national colours which are tried to be banned, the Kurdish workers and labourers who filled the streets on Newroz showed that they will not surrender to repressions. The police blocked some of the buses which would carry the demonstrators from various districts to the demonstration place. 150 thousand people participated at each of the celebrations in Van, Batman and Sirnak and cried out their demands for freedom, equality and fraternity. The police attacked at the demonstrators in many cities and arrested hundreds of people.
The Newroz Day was celebrated also in Europe and in many other countries in the world.
Central Committee of our party MLCP made a statement on 2 March and called upon all the oppressed peoples - no matter if they are Kurds, Turks, Arabs, Laz or Circassians- to uprise against the imperialist occupation, war and aggression; against the chauvinist wave and lynching groups; and against colonialist fascist attacks based on denial and annihilation.
The Marxist Leninist communists have been among the organisers of Newroz celebrations or participated actively at the celebrations. They carried the slogans of revolution and socialism, freedom and fraternity to the streets. Our party MLCP expressed itself freely with its banners, flags and slogans at some of the main demonstrations, but it did not limit itself with the main demonstrations. It has carried out armed actions and road-cuts with Molotov cocktails at the streets of Istanbul to celebrate the Newroz fest, to grow the fire of freedom, to increase the fraternity and the united struggle and to ask account from the oppressors.
At the demonstrations and street actions, Marxist Leninist communists also commemorated our comrade Tuncay Yildirim who turned into a martyr on a Newroz day while he was on a death fast against isolation in prisons.
