The period of May 17-May 31 is known as the "International Weeks against forced disappearances". During that period, democratic mass organizations and human rights defenders commemorate the forced disappeared in Turkey and Northern Kurdistan and other countries of the world. The applications for people disappeared never stop in Turkey and Northern Kurdistan, where the official umber of forced disappeared is around 1250. But the state policy of disappearance in Turkey, which was especially after the military coup in September 1980 in order to exterminate first of all the communists and revolutionaries and the opposition, and in the 1990`ies applied in a systematic way, was strongly defeated with the movement of the Saturday Mothers. After comrade and fighter of our party Hasan Ocak was disappeared, a campaign was started which revealed most of the state's true face. As a result of this struggle, comrade Hasan Ocak`s dead body was found and buried at Gazi cemetery. The funeral turned into a big action at which ten thousand participated. And the struggle against disappearance continued: The Saturday Mothers were born.
The Saturday Mothers, among them mainly relatives of the forced disappeared, followed the line of the Argentinean Mothers of the Plazo de Mayo and started to make sit-ins every Saturday from 1995 on in front of the Galatasaray high school. This movement became stronger and formed one part of the agenda of the social struggle. In 1996, the first International Conference against Disappearance was organized in Istanbul together with delegates from many countries. At the same conference, an international committee against forced disappearance was also founded. The foundation of an international committee showed that disappearances are not a problem of Turkey, but an international problem. Starting from Hitler fascism in Germany and in many other countries people have been kidnapped and killed, their bodies were disappeared by throwing them into the sea or the forest or by burying them at the cemetery for unknown people. The families always tried to register the disappeared everywhere, but never got any information on their relatives. This problem is the same in every country and the target group of the policy of disappearances is everywhere the same. Everyone opposing the state or the system, fighting for freedom and justice could be among the target group. The policy of disappearances is one of the bourgeoisie's methods to oppress and annihilate the opposition, which is applied very often. Others methods are torture, massacres, extra-judicial killings, isolation, and rape under arrest. The policy of disappearances was brought over from Latin America to Asia, Africa and Europe and has always been realized with the support of international capital. Still happening in many countries of the world, the number of forced disappearances might be more than hundred thousands.
Due to the "International Weeks against forced disappearances" from May 17- May 31, different actions took place in many countries. In Istanbul, ICAD , YAKAY-DER and the Human Rights Association IHD organized a mass action at Galatasaray Square with a press statement demanding "Find the mass graves, explain the 1000 operations". On May 19, a sit-in was organized at the same place and afterwards the graves of Hasan Ocak and Ridvan Karakoc at Gazi cemetery were visited for a commemorative event.
Due to the International Weeks against Forced Disappearance, the militants of our party ... realized actions of hanging up banners and blockading the streets in different boroughs. On May 29, our party militants blockaded the street no: 3001 in the borough Umraniye in Istanbul and marched with the banner "Demanding account for the forced disappearances!".
In London, an action was organized where the slogans "Stop disappearances under arrest", "Down with fascism, down with imperialism" and "Stop the fascist attacks in Turkey" were raised. In the Netherlands, a provocative attempt made by the police was revealed and stopped. In Bern (Switzerland) and different cities of Germany, sit-ins were organized and exhibitions for the forces disappeared were opened. Another sit-in was organized in Berlin on May 19 with pictures of the forced disappeared and the banner "International struggle against disappearance".
It is the imperialist capitalist system responsible for disappearance under arrest. While our party is leading the struggle for the revolution and socialism, it will also continue to demand an account from those responsible for our comrades, revolutionaries, workers and labourers who were forced disappeared.
