The local elections took place on 28th of March in Turkey and Northern Kurdistan. There were 43.5 million people registered as voters in 2004 elections, but more than 10 million of them did not use their votes. Thus, this has formed the local election that was participated by minimum people in the last 20 years.

During the election campaigns, the Islamic AKP (Justice and Development Party), which is keeping the opportunities of being on the power and has also taken the support of the capital, and all other bourgeois parties, again, made numerous promises in order to mislead workers and laborers. They almost put mortgage to the votes of the workers and laborers by carrying their lies and demagogies 24 hours-a-day to the workers and toilers through media, and by influencing people via election polls and other methods.

In the elections, the ruling party AKP, which is under the service of the USA and other imperialists together with her line of enemy of labor and Islamic, has taken most of the council's presidency by taking 42 % of the valid votes. Doubtlessly, not having free elections and finding ballot papers in the bins in some of the election areas have also played a role in this result. Also, AKP was able to canalize the demand for a change and protests of the people over the corruption, bribery and dirty politics to her own channels through demagogies. This point is the most highest point that AKP could reach. But, following things can be said regarding the appearance of a such result:

The people of Turkey and Northern Kurdistan have continued to their attitude that they have shown during the general elections in November 2002 and did not vote for the more than 10 traditional parties of the imperialism and the collaborationist monopolistic bourgeoisie, some of them were on the political arena for decades. Because, they have tried them before and seen their enemy face against the labor. Despite of being in opposition, the "social liberal" CHP (People's Republican Party), the only regime party that is in the opposition in parliament and which continued as a party since foundation of the Republic of Turkey, was not able to escape from losing votes and, therefore, have lost many important councils.

The other important development that occurred during the elections was the Kurdish natioanl reformist DEHAP 's (Democratic People 's Party), which is mainly supported by Kurdish people on important average, participation to the elections under the roof of the regime party SHP (Social-Democratic People Party) via taking on her side some petty-bourgeois reformist parties such as EMEP (Party of Labor), ODP (Party of Fredoom and Democracy), SDP (Socialist Democracy Party) and the Ozgur Party (Free Party). This alliance which carried out under the name of Democratic Unity of Forces and tried to put workers and laborers behind the regime has also suffered a defeat in the elections. During the 3 November 2002 General Elections the Unity of Forces was taking 6.2 of the votes (without SHP), but now they have taken 5,1 % of the votes. The DEHAP and petty-bourgeoisie parties have tried to present this regime party, SHP -which was a coaltion partner of the government during the fascist dictatorship's dirty war against the Kurdish people, and therefore, was thrown to the dustbin by the people and who did not had any political influence- as a left and democratic party. But, workers and laborers, and especially the Kurdish people, did not accept it, and this has caused to drop of the number of support to DEHAP. The Democratic Unity of Forces under the roof of SHP have lost the council's those were gained by HADEP, which participated as one party during the 1999 local elections in Northern Kurdistan.

What Kurdish people, workers and toilers have shown through this attitude of them;

1- They did not forget what they have suffered during the dirty war, and therefore, they will not vote for the regime party SHP.

2- They did not approve the tries of DEHAP in order to be considered as 'good' and accepted by the colonialist system via developing collaboration with the regime parties.

3- The people have shown that they have a great will for unity but that this is not possible with regime parties such as SHP, and have interrogated the "democratic" character of the Democratic Unity of Forces.

4- The people have shown that they are in a search by giving their votes to the AKP, which was a relatively new party and its enemy face against the labor is not being understood yet.

The Marxist Leninist Communists, those which always had strong will of bringing anti-fascist, progressive and democratic forces together, partici-pated to the elections as an alternative socialist power and tried to benefit from the election period in the very best way. This was the case because they knew the search of the DEHAP -which was looking for alliance within the borders of the regime- and ongoing tendencies of the petty-bourgeois reformist parties.

The Socialist Platform of Oppressed ( ESP ), which participated to the elections with 23 candidates and conducted campaign by opening about 60 election bureaus, has carried the light of socialism to the workers and laborers. The ESP met with then thousands of workers and toilers through their election campaign which were conducted by uniting many methods with the slogan of "Socialism for a New City and decent life", and faced with intensive attacks of the fascist dictatorship. ESP has faced attacks almost in everywhere, their bureaus were raided, their activists were kidnapped, threatened, taken into detention and imprisoned. But ESP increased her works in a form of more determinant and enthusiastic way and answered with a loud "for revolution and socialism". The ESP, which -through their active resistance- shown that they will not stop in the face of attacks, has destroyed the fear-wall of the dictatorship and received positive responses from workers and toilers because of their determined revolutionary stance against the fascist attacks and clear stance of carrying the light of socialism to the masses.

During the elections, the Marxist Leninist Communists have also said "hello" to the poor people of Amed, the heart of Kurdistan, and strengthened their works in Northern Kurdistan. Despite to State's attacks in order to stop communists to enter to Amed, the communists are now making red the streets of Amed with their activities and slogans by saying "You can't stop us, we will win".
