The Police attacked the 4th street festival on the occasion of the foundation of the workers district 1 Mayis of Istanbul, which was founded on September 2, in 1977 through a great battle directed by the revolutionaries.
The street festival, which was planned to took place two days, started on September 1, with a participation of approximately 3500 inhabitants of the neighborhood.
At September 2, the police attacked a demonstration which was also part of the festival. At this demonstration, participated by ESP , the journal "Alinteri", the Federation of Basic Rights, SODAP and the journal "Partizan", different speeches were delivered against the decision to send troops to Lebanon, against degeneration and the criminal gangs against whom the inhabitants are fighting already for a long time.
During the demonstration the police, which had concentrated its forces in the district, attacked the demonstrators with tear gas. The people of 1 Mayis started a resistance by building barricades. After the conflict the police withdrew, but nevertheless the revolutionaries waited behind the barricades until the police had withdrawn completely from the whole district.
