Trade unions were in action against the minimum wage on the 13th of December.
Confederation of Revolutionary Workers' Unions ( DISK ) carried its campaign "Dear President, how much bread = minimum wage?" to the streets by organizing street actions in Istanbul and Ankara.
Suleyman Celebi, General President of DISK expressed that the minimum wage which is equal to 12.7 YTL per day is the wage of hunger and misery and stated that the political power and the bosses never care about the social-economical conditions of the country while fixing the amount of the minimum wage and that the commission for minimum wage which consists of the representatives of the government, bosses and Turk-Is (Confederation of Turkish Trade Unions) are trying to convert the country into a market of cheap labour force. The workers expressed the following in the actions: "The problem is not whether the minimum wage should be increased to the minimum wage of a public employee or to the border of hunger. The problem is to conduct a persistent and resolute fight against the fact that the minimum wage condemns people to hunger and poverty."
The unions Petrol-Is , Tez-Kop-Is, Belediye-Is and Tuzla Deri-Is which are affiliated to Turk-Is also made a street action in Galatasaray in Istanbul. In the action which was supported by Tekstil-Sen union, the workers raised the slogan "Turk-Is, don't sleep, do something!"
The union Limter-Is made a street action on the same day in Icmeler in Tuzla/Istanbul to demand that the minimum wage should be increased to a level where the workers can live as humans. The dockyard workers carried the banners "No to the wage of misery!" and "Cancellation of the Anti-terror law! Freedom to the imprisoned unionists!". They also protested that the cases of Cem Dinc, General President, and Zafer Tektas, General Secretary of Limter-Is who were imprisoned after the raids on 21 September are still not opened.
