425 municipality workers have announced indefinite strike in Mardin in N. Kurdistan.
The workers made a press meeting on 17 February to announce the strike. Memduh Ozturk, Chairman of the Mardin Branch of the municipality workers' union Belediye-Is made a statement here on behalf of the workers, explaining that they had made many actions before and after each of them they had been promised to be paid the part of their salaries which was kept not paid before. But this unpaid amount continuously increases for the last 3 years. He also told that they had went to the municipality in order to make a meeting with the Mayor from AKP (Party of Justice and Development-government party), but they were expulsed from the building. The police attacked at the workers who were waiting in front of the building and took 5 workers under custody, and including even the chairman of the union, under the pretext that "they had occupied the building". After that, Memduh Ozturk announced that they will continue the strike until the problem is solved.
