While Mayday comes closer, the determination to be in Taksim on the 30th anniversary of the Massacre of Mayday 1977 grows. On that day, a counter-guerrilla bombing was carried out against the 500 thousand workers and labourers who had gathered in Taksim and 36 workers were killed. Since that time, Taksim is one of the forbidden squares of Turkey and N. Kurdistan.
The workers' unions' confederations DISK and KESK , engineers' chamber TMMOB and the doctors' chamber TTB made a press meeting at Hill Hotel in Taksim on 26 April and they repeated once more that they will be in Taksim on Mayday.
General Secretary of DISK, Musa Cam, made a speech here. He said that it is an obligation to be in Taksim on the 30th anniversary of Mayday 1977 to commemorate 36 workers who had lost their lives" and that they "will be in Taksim on Tuesday, the 1st of May, as a necessity of the decision that the four organisation had taken".
The leaders of DISK, KESK, TMMOB and TTB had made a meeting with Abdulkadir Aksu, Minister of Internal Affairs, on 24 May and Aksu had repeated there that Taksim is not a demonstration square. Governor of Istanbul had launched threats against the efforts of celebrating Mayday in Taksim. And the state terror against the activities of calling the masses for Mayday celebrations still continues. Istanbul police attacks at the street actions of different organisations that announce that they will be in Taksim on Mayday. Many revolutionaries are being arrested for sticking posters and delivering flyers that call for Mayday. But despite the threats and the attacks of the state, the determination of being in Taksim on Mayday increases.
Turk-Is , another big confederation of workers' unions, which has turned into the spokesman of the bourgeoisie, continues with its efforts for dividing the will of the workers and labourers for Taksim. On 25 April, a press meeting was held by Turk-Is. General president of the confederation, Salih Kilic, emphasised once more that they will be in Kadikoy because of the "sensitive situation of the country". This attitude of Turk-Is is being denounced and isolated by the trade unions, mass organisations and progressive, revolutionary, communist forces.
