There is a big water crisis in Ankara, the capital of Turkey. Starting from 1 August there is a part-time interruption in the water supply in Ankara. The person responsible is Melih Gokcek who is a member of the government party
AKP and mayor of Ankara.
The National Water Institute (DSI) had prepared a water supply project named Gerede in 2005 but Gokcek rejected this project. “We do not want to increase our depths. Our priority is not water supply; the priority is the subway project” said Melih Gokcek 3 years ago. If the Gerede project were started it would finish in 2008 and would guarantee the water supply for Ankara until 2027.
Although he was warned of a water crisis by reports before, Melih Gokcek did not undertake measures of prevention. He left the problem to be resolved by God. He proposed to “take a holiday” to the people of Ankara. Ankara Chamber of Civil Engineers announced that Ankara is governed by an irresponsible, incompetent mayor.
Now, it was declared that the interruption of water supply will last for 5 months.
