The negotiations on a collective agreement finally ended with a wage deal agreed on by the trade union Hava-Is and Turkish Airlines. Hava-Is had demanded a wage increase of 23.9% for the first six months for the collective agreement and an increase in line with the inflation rate plus an additional 5% for the next one and a half years.* Turkish Airlines, however, had suggested 10% for the first six months, an increase of the inflation rate plus 1% for the second half of the year and an increase in line with the inflation rate for the next year. Hava-Is had also raised some other demands which were about social rights and flight security. In case of a non-agreement, the trade union had considered to go for strike while the bosses took the decision to lockout the workers.
According to the agreement achieved on August 27, there will be an increase of 10% in average to all wages and an additional 80 TRY in the first year; in 2008, there will be a wage increase of 3% plus the difference to the inflation rate, for the second half 4% and the difference to the inflation rate.
Apart from an increase of the wage, the agreement also includes extra regulations for the workers concerning their social rights such as meal support, marriage support, social support, nursery support, death benefit and money for non-private trips as well as an amelioration of the casual workers' rights.
In a statement made by the general president Atilay Aycin in the name of Hava-Is, he said that after years they have manages to remind and make people think again of an organisation called trade union and a constitutional right called strike. He emphasized that the agreement has been a victory.
