The population of the quarter Mayday, one of Istanbul's labourer quarters, met at the 5th Traditional Festival for the Foundation of the quarter Mayday. 5000 labourers joined the activities on the first day of the festival that started on August 31 and is ending on September 2. In a speech hold at the opening concert in the evening of August 31, it was explained that the aim of this festival are the condemnation of the massacre on September 2 1977 in the quarter and the commemoration of the brave people that were killed during the foundation of the quarter. In the speech it was also said: "Our festival, that will prevent the people living in this quarter from estranging to their own history, develop unity and mutuality against the problems experiencing, increase the organisational structure while creating projects for solutions, and that is based on the unity and solidarity culture created during the quarter's foundation, will move forwards with the aim to raise the resistance struggle. The program continues with the performance of the folkdance group of the Association for the Improvement of the quarter Mayday, the songs of Nilufer Saritas and the concert of Ferhat Tunc.
Apart from the concerts and plays, there were also panels organised at the festival with the title "The oppressed nations and the oppressed religions", "Demolition and city transformation" and "The historical reasons for September 2 1977, degeneration and poverty".
On the last day of the festival, a demonstration was organised under the motto "In its 30iest year with the spirit of September 2, defend your culture against degeneration". The mass carried a banner with the photos of the 12 people who had died during the foundation of the quarter."
The militia of our party MLCP blockaded the street no. 3001 to salute the foundation anniversary of the quarter Mayday. They hanged a banner on the street saying "With the spirit in the 30iest year, we salute the foundation anniversary of the quarter Mayday".
