Students organised actions against YOK

On November 6, the anniversary of foundation, YOK (Council of Higher Education), which is a product of the coup of September 12, 1980 was protested with actions in many cities of Turkey and Northern Kurdistan. Students of secondary school and university gathered at Beyazit Square, Istanbul, opening the banner read "We want education for free and our rights of freedom of speech, action and organisation at universities". The students of secondary school also opened a banner on which it said "Neither trading firm nor prison, but equal free secondary school". At the action there was additional a banner opened read "Raise your voice against the dirty war and chauvinism for the fraternity of the people". In a statement made in the name of the university students the plans for a cross-border occupation were also mentioned and it was stressed that it is tried to make the people enemies. The statement called on the Turkish youth to stand up against the chauvinist aggression and declared that for the fraternity of the people the Kurdish people's demands for rights must be defended. The students of the secondary schools made an own statement demanding the annulment of OSS and talked about the violence in their schools.
The students of Cukurova University Adana, organised a demonstration to protest against YOK as well as the racist, fascist attacks and parliament's approval of a cross-border operation. The students made a statement and said: "We as the students of Cukurova University will continue to defend our right to education and our universities and struggle together with Kurdish, Turkish, Arap and Laz against the try to make our people enemies."
Students of Uludag University, Bursa, organised an action on the campus. In their statements the students also mentioned the attacks carried out in Bursa against Kurdish people and raised the slogan of the fraternity of the people.
The action organised at the campus of Ege University, Izmir, had to face a provocing attack by a nationalist group of 20 people. The fascist provocation was answered with the slogans "Ege will become a grave for fascism" and "Long live the fraternity of the people". The students opened a banner read "We defend our future. We will smash YOK" and later visited the Telekom workers at Bornova Buyukpark who were on strike.
 In Ankara youth organisations such as SGD , DGH, DPG and Ekim Gencligi met at Konur Street and marched until Sakarya highroad. The students said in their statement: "Yok which had come with the coup must be annulled with all its institutions. The right on speech, authority and the right on decision must be given to the students and the real components of university. The contingent of police at the universities must be cancelled." The members of the Youth Federation, who had come from different cities and met at Ankara, organised an action in front of the presidency of YOK. Another action in Ankara was organised by the Platform Against the Coup in Ankara. The members of the platform organised an action at Yuksel Street and said that YOK is the extension of the fascism of September 12, 1980 and demanded the annulment of YOK and the conviction of the junta.
In Malatya the youth organisations SGD, DGH and YDG organised an action and opened a banner on which it said "Join the ranks of youth and fraternity against racist YOK". The young activists raised their demands for scientific and democratic education in the mother tongue and for free. They called on the whole youth, from Turkish-Kurdish to Alevi-Sunni, to unite with these demands and join the struggle.
YOK was also protested with actions in Kocaeli, Samsun, Antep, Usak, Balikesir, Sivas, Siirt and Amed.
