Four police men charged to be responsible for the murder of Birtan Altinbas, student of Hacettepe University, Ankara, with torture under arrest, were finally sentenced and the case finished after 17 years. Altinbas had been arrested on January 5, 1991 and taken to Ankara Police Station where he later died because of torture. After his murder, a procedure was opened against the police men Ibrahim Dedeoglu, Sadi Cayli, Hasan Cavit Orhan and Süleyman Sinkil responsible for killing Altinbas with torture. In order to hinder a sentence of the police men, the procedure was extended over the years when lastly, the police men were sentenced to 8 years and 10 months of prison by the Heavy Penalty Court No. 2, Ankara.
The verdict was verified after the Supreme Court refused the appeals. However, the police men only need to stay in prison for 1 year and 9 months as due to the Anti-terror law launched in 1991, only 1/5th of the sentence needs to be served behind bars if the offence was committed before 1991. This shows how murderer police men are yet another time crowned for killing someone with torture under arrest.
