On February 17 the parliament of Kosovo, which gathered under the umbrella of the imperialists, declared its independence. Before the declaration of the independence, many imperialist countries had already announced that they will approve the independence of this country. In fact, what is happening here is that the imperialist states that bloodily oppress their national and social liberation struggle worked out a plan for the dependence of the Kosovo and name it "independence". Among the countries that immediately approved the independence of Kosovo are the USA, Albania, Turkey, UK, Afghanistan, Germany and Italy and this gives us an idea of the independence declared in Kosovo. In a proclamation published by the president of Kosovo Fatmir Seydiu and the prime minister Taci, who had announced the independence, it says on the Kosovo "to become fully integrated in the EU and NATO; its new constitutions shall be on the basis of UN Special Envoy Martti Ahtisaari`s plan, and NATO shall be invited for continuing its residence in the region", and this shows what kind of independence was announced.
The big majority of the Kosovo population are Albanians. Besides the Albanians, there are also national minorities such as Serbs, Turks, Bosnians, Gypsies and Guranis living in Kosovo. When since 1989 the imperialist countries began to apply their divide and rule policy in Yugoslavia as they had done before in the Balkans and inciting the nations what subsequently lead to clashes and massacres and the split of Yugoslavia, the Albanians of Kosovo started an armed struggle with the aim to become independent from Serbia. The Kosovo Liberation Army (UCK) that was founded as the armed force of the Kosovo Albanians against the Serbian tyranny and massacres could not resist the force of the USA and the imperialist countries and dispersed its armed forces. Diverging from its independent, anti-imperialist struggle line, it went into collaboration with the USA and the other imperialists. The imperialist countries, which occupied Kosovo through the NATO have continued with this occupation of Kosovo under the umbrella of the UN.
The occupation period of Kosovo has also shown the concurrency between the imperialists concerning Kosovo. As a step to settle in the Balkans, the USA has founded its biggest European military base in Kosovo. Russia that did not want to stay silence during the period of the occupation of Kosovo occupied the airport of Pristina and showed that it is not going to leave Kosovo totally to the Western imperialists. Reasons such as that geographically Kosovo is in the centre of the Balkans and has underground minerals make it attracting for the imperialists.
The independence declared in Kosovo has not been practiced on the basis of the right of the nations to self-determination. It was a plan that the imperialists had planned and applied for the sake of their own interests. The aim was to accomplish the protectorate exploitation in occupied Kosovo. It is the "controlled independence" prepared and proposed by the UN`s Special Envoy of Kosovo Martti Ahtisaari in spring 2007. With this step that is totally made under the control of the USA and EU, it is the EU that has become the executive force in Kosovo after the UN. This plan which involved the education of the Kosovo police with a "special" force of 2000 soldiers additionally to the military force massed in Kosovo by the NATO as well as the re-organisation of the administrative institutions is limiting the influence of Russia and contradicts its strategic interests. This is why Russia did not approve the independence of Kosovo. While the EU used this plan to strengthen its power in Kosovo and used this opportunity to strengthen its influence in the Balkans, the USA, however, is ensuring its existence in Kosovo through NATO as well as through its military bases and power.
It is not only the imperialists but also the states in this region who struggle for hegemony in Kosovo. While Serbia considers Kosovo as its own land and rejects its separation, Albania also dreams of a Great Albania including Kosovo. The Serbian state declared never to approve the independence of Kosovo and led the Serbian racism on the streets to turn into organised violent actions.
The imperialist states approving the independence of Kosovo are supporting the dirty war and massacres of the fascist Turkish state against the Kurdish people. The Turkish state that also immediately approved the independence of Kosovo, however, continues with its hostility of the Kurdish people by practising its denial and annihilation policy, and lately by its land operation started on February 21 in South Kurdistan after the aerial bombings that had been started in December 2007.
The MLCP approves the right of the nations to self-determination for all nations oppressed and therefore, for Kosovo, too. However, the independence declared in Kosovo does not solve the nations` question on the right to self-determination in Kosovo. Instead, it condemns the Kosovo people under the yoke of imperialist forces. Although in this sense, the Kosovo people had been fighting until a special date, their declaration of independence is not a result that was achieved by its own power after the UCK was dispersed. On the other hand; although this result was achieved in relation with the bourgeois solution plan, which is part of the imperialist plans, this does not justify and legitimise the Serbian nationalism. The real independence of Kosovo will only be achieved with the own power, actions and struggle of the people living in Kosovo.
