In the 40th anniversary of the 1968 movement, the 36th anniversary of the execution of the revolutionary leaders Deniz Gezmis, Yusuf Aslan and Hüseyin Inan and the 35th anniversary of the assassination of Ibrahim Kaypakkaya, tens of thousands of people gathered all over Turkey and Northern Kurdistan to renew their oath of revolution.
On May, 6, the day when Deniz and his comrades were executed, ten thousand people came together at the cemetery Karsiyaka in Ankara with carnations in their hands and shouted the slogans: "Long live the brotherhood of the peoples" and "The putschist will account to the people". The majority of the participants in this commemoration act, in which many different organisations and platforms, such as the ESP , ODP , DTP , EMEP and Partizan participated, were young people. On the same day, the ESP organised also an action in Istanbul-Dolmabahce. The activists participating in this action underlined, that there are not only here in order to commemorate the assassinated leaders but also in order to advance by learning from them.
On the occasion of the anniversary of the ´68 youth movement and the revolutionary surge of ´71, the ESP organised panel discussions in different cities under the motto: "from Deniz and his friends, Mahir and his friends to Ibo and his friends - we march from the tradition to the future". On May, 25, the activists of the SGD of Nurhak and Elbistan organised a panel discussion on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the revolutionary youth movement of ´68 in the building of Egitim-Sen . On May, 6 the college students were on the streets under the leadership of LÖB. The college students said "we have to be Deniz against imperialism" and showed that they did not forget the revolutionary inheritance. The students of the university ODTU in Ankara wrote "REVOLUTION" with candles in the stadium of the university, as the revolutionary leaders also did in 1968. Approximately 6000 students made a mass demonstration under the main slogan: "the feet will become the head. The only way is revolution".
The members of the SGD in Izmir opened an exhibition with the pictures and last words of the executed revolutionary leaders. In Malatya, Istanbul, Izmir, Sivas, Mugla, Antep, Bursa, Cyprus and many other places hundreds of young people met in the streets, among them also the SGD, ESP, SDP , DTP, PSAKD and EMEP, organised activities and carried out commemoration acts. On May, 9, BEKSAV organised a panel with the title "the situation and tendency of the revolutionary movement from the times of Deniz, Mahir and Ibrahim until today".
Ibrahim Kaypakkaya, the founding leader of the TKP-ML, who was murdered on May 18, 1973, was commemorated at his grave in Corum and also in other places with commemoration acts. The ESP, Partizan, DHP, DTP, the Association of Unity and Solidarity of the 78ties and the Federation of the Revolutionary 78ties departed from Ankara, Corum, Mersin and Samsun under the banner: "We gave the martyrs the oath of revolution, maybe we will not be there, but the steel will not forget the water it got" and gathered in spite of many obstacles set by the gendarmes at the cemetery in Corum, in the village Karakaya.
The ´68 movement and the following revolutionary surge in ´71 are representing an important milestone for the revolutionary movement in Turkey and Northern Kurdistan, because raising anti-imperialist demands the movement distanced itself from the legal parties. The leaders of the ´68 youth movement founded in 1971 THKO , THKP-C and the TKP-ML and thus broke off from the revisionist, reformist, legalist framework and they laid the fundament of the organisations, which carry out the revolutionary struggle in our country today. At the same time, the right of self-determination of the Kurdish people was included to the agenda under the leadership of Ibrahim Kaypakkaya. Due to the high interest for social incidents it showed, the movement of ´68 cannot only be considered as a student's movement. Today, in its 40th anniversary, the students movement gets more power with the foundation of the trade-union Genc-Sen and so does its interest for the working class, the women movement, who celebrated March, 8 together this year, shows its force and the struggle in the dockyards against the mortal work accidents under the leadership of the trade-union Limter-Is is developing on one united line and shows the way to follow. So, the heritage of the ´68 movement does not only show itself in our country, but allover the world.
