Shipyard workers prepare themselves for June 16

Shipyard workers are going on a new strike on June 16 under the leadership of the union Limkter-Is that has led a determined and militant struggle for several months against the work-related accidents resulting in the death of the workers and that has yet another time shown its power and determination from the strike realised on February 28-29 at Tuzla shipyards` region.
The strike will be realised at the anniversary of the great workers` strike of June 15-16, 1970, and aims at putting an end to the work-related accidents at Tuzla shipyards that due to the frequency are in fact to be considered as massacres.
The leaders of Limter-Is made a press conference on June 8 informing on the preparations for the strike. At the meeting they also gave the information that on the same morning the worker Ihsan Turhan lost his life in a work-related accident and once again stressed the importance of this strike. Limter-Is union`s pres conference was supported by different unions, political parties and platforms.
On the evening of June 10, Limter-Is members organised a march from the Hidrodinamik Shipyard located at Tuzla until Icmeler Train Station shouting the slogan "Strike, strike, strike" and calling on their colleagues to join the strike. At Icmeler Train Station Limter-Is leader Kamber Saygili said: "40.000 shipyard workers will go on strike on the morning of June 16 and bring an end to this question."
The demands of the strike are as follows:
- Application of the Law for Heavy and Dangerous Sectors at the Shipyards,
- Daily working hours should be decided as 7,5 hours; application of breaks, rests and holidays,
- Ensuring of payment of insurance and wages by the main company,
- Clean houses to stay, lockers for changing clothes, qualitative food suitable to the sector,
- Ensuring health services including hospital, doctor and ambulance,
- Giving the union opportunities to open branches at every shipyard,
- Putting an end to the oppression on the union and overcoming all obstacles of becoming a member of the union
- Abolishing all subcontract work
- Formation of a "Council for Observation the Health of the Workers and Security at the Workplace" in Turkey in general as well as in each sector.
