Public workers in Northern Cyprus went on a one day lasting strike. In Northern Cyprus, which is under the control of Turkey, public workers` wages are risen by the government allegedly according to the inflation rate and not with a collective agreement.
This was done in periods of 2 months, but when this adjustment wanted to be changed to first 4 months and then 6 months because of the reason that "Turkey does not want to supply us with more resources", the unions decided to go on a one-day strike. The strike called on by 35 unions was applied flexibly according to the different sectors.{divide}
Finance Minister of Northern Cyprus Ahmet Uzun declared that they need at least 80-90 million YTL to make the payments in the regular period and that Turkey does not give them this money. For 2008, they received 600 million YTL from Turkey, but because of economical "difficulties" they had to ask for an extra-budget in the last months, they did not get a positive reply from the current AKP government and consider Turkey as responsible for the difficulties public labourers are facing.
