HPG guerrilla forces declared to have kidnapped 3 German mountaineers at Ararat Mountain in Northern Kurdistan on July 9, 2008. The HPG guerrillas called on the German state to put an end to the oppressing policy against the Kurdish people such as the ban of the Kurdish TV channel Roj TV. At the same time Germany was called on to finish the operations in the region for the safety of the 3 German hostages. The guerrilla announced that they would only release the 3 German mountaineers if the German state changes its current policy against the Kurdish people and the PKK . German Minister of Foreign Affairs Steinmeier, however, declared in a speech that Germany is not willing to fulfill any of the conditions demanded and that "the German government will not allow anyone to blackmail them".
