Dursun Karatas, General Secretary of the DHKP-C, has lost his life because of cancer on August 11. Karatas has been buried at the Gazi Cemetery after the ceremonies in Europe and Istanbul.
DHKP announced that Dursun Karatas has turned into a martyr, through a statement dated August 11, 2008, with the following words: "Condolences to the peoples of Turkey and the world. We have lost a great revolutionary".{divide}
The corpse of Karatas was sent to Istanbul after a commemoration in Rotterdam/Netherlands. DHKP-C members and activists from all over Europe and the revolutionary organisations from Turkey, MLCP, MKP , PKK , TKP/ML and TKIP, participated at the commemoration. There his comrades made speeches explaining his life and struggle a documental containing pictures and videos from his struggle was projected. Then, his corpse was sent to Istanbul with the slogans "Leader Comrade Dursun Karatas", "DHKP-C is the name of hope".
The militants of the DHKP-C saluted Dursun Karatas through actions at Kucuk Armutlu and Gazi quarters on August 11 at night and at Okmeydani on August 12. The police attacks against these actions were fought back through resistances with stones and petrol bombs.
The corpse of Karatas was brought to Istanbul on August 14 and was buried on August 15. Thousands of people participated at his funeral that was realised at Gazi quarter. During the funeral, al the roads to the main street were cut and all the shopkeepers closed down their shops responding the call of the revolutionaries. The mass marched by shouting the slogans "Dursun Karatas is immortal", "DHKP-C is the name of hope", "Oligarchy, be afraid, DHKP-C is coming", "Salute to the leader, the struggle continues" and "Long live revolutionary solidarity" and by carrying red flags.
The militants of the DHKP-C participated at the march by opening the banner of the DHKP-C freely and shouting slogans in favour of it. Many revolutionary and democratic organisations, among them the ESP and the DTP , also participated at the funeral and strengthened the comradeship-in-arms.
