Güler Zere
Guler Zere, political prisoner accused of being a member of DHKP-C, will be set free after spending a long time in prison despite that she suffers from cancer. Campaigns and actions that have continued for months for the freedom of Zere have been successful. The Forensic Medicine Institution has compiled a report stating that Zere should be set free and has sent it to the President of the Republic. Lastly, the Forensic Medicine Institution had compiled a report on July 16 stating that the execution of the penalty of Zere could be continued. During this period, the illness of Zere has irreversibly worsened.
The Turkish Medical Association had demanded "right to bid farewell and to be at peace" for Zere. Zere has been in prison for 14 years and had received a penalty of 34 years.
The actions for the freedom of Zere have continued during the last week, too. On November 3, actions were made in 15 cities in front of AKP 's local offices, among them Istanbul, Izmir, Ankara and Malatya demanding the release of Guler Zere.
In Izmir, the Platform to Struggle Against Isolation made an action in front of the AKP's local office and drew attention to the fact that nearly 400 prisoners have been severely sick and 36 out of them have cancer. At the sit-in, it was said that the situation of Zere has become worse. Zere so far only weighs 40 kilos and can't hear and see anymore. In addition, she also can't drink anything anymore.
In Ankara democratic and revolutionary organisations, among them Peoples Front, DTP and ESP realised a march to the AKP's local office demanding the release of the sick prisoners.
In Istanbul the Platform of Freedom to Guler Zere made an action with the slogans "Freedom to Guler Zere" and "The murderer state will render account" were shouted.
In Malatya, an action was organised by ESP and Peoples Front and supported by the DTP opening a banner read "Freedom to the prisoner Guler Zere who has cancer. All sick prisoners must be released".
Besides, the Peoples Front organised a hunger strike for 3 days in Malatya from October 30 to November 1. The action was finished with a march with torches.
On November 4 at the Abdi Ipekci Square in Ankara, 35 members of the Youth Federation made a statement to the press and started a three-day-hunger-strike.
As a result of these determined struggles for the freedom of ill prisoners, on November 5, the Forensic Medicine Institution compiled a new report that lets Zere be released.
