While many prisoners with serious diseases strive for their lives in prisons, prisoners' relatives and human rights defenders increase their struggle for better conditions of medical treatment and with the demand of "right to bid farewell to relatives and friends" for the prisoners who are close to death.{divide}
Abdullah Akcay, an 18-year old Kurdish teenager from Mardin who was imprisoned for ordinary crimes while he was 14 years old, lost his life on July 21 in the morning. Akcay was receiving medical treatment in the Hospital of Education and Researches in Okmeydani since 11 months. There was not even sunshine in the prisoners' department where he was kept.
15 days ago, the Forensic Medicine Institute had issued a medical report where they recommended to not setting him free. In face of the months-long struggle of Akcay's relatives, lawyers and human rights organisations, the Institute had changed its decision on July 15. This decision was taken on the basis of revision the report of the Hospital of Education and Researches in Okmeydani where it was stated that the medical treatment of Akcay is not possible under the conditions of imprisonment. Following this, the attorney had decided to postpone the execution of Akcay's sentence for three months.
