For the revolutionary and democratic forces, Carkin's confessions present important data in terms of the trial of coup and dirty-war crimes of fascism. However, when we consider the outcomes of Gazi massacre case, court cases on torture, Susurluk case and Ergenekon case, where the real responsibles of the massacres were not tried, there needs to be a line of struggle on the streets that is persistent, widespread and not limited with legal struggle in order to have real retribution of these confessions.

The recent confessions by Ayhan Carkin, former member of special operations police whose name was heard following the Susurluk accident, have revealed the massacres and dirty-war crimes waged against revolutionaries, communists and Kurdish patriots by the Turkish bourgeoisie state. Carkin has made striking confessions during his participation to the Newroz celebrations in Istanbul on 21 March and by giving interviews on the same days to various TV channels and newspapers.
49 years old Carkin is known as the member of special team who took part in highest number of operations. Carkin, who worked for special operations department for 19 years since 1986, was also in the team of 320 special dirty-war personal went to Kurdistan in 1986. Carkin, who start working for Istanbul Anti-Terror Branch in 90s, participates in all the massacres carried out against revolutionaries such as in Perpa and bahcelievler.
The followings are some of the confessions made by Carkin who said that he "did not keep the record of people that he killed", that he may have killed nearly 1000 people during his work time in the special operations team:
"I was in the team of 320 special operations personal who sent to Southeast in 1986. I stayed in the region until 1990. We all had bloods on our hands. Such terrifying things were done to those people. When we went there we saw a man taking of all the clothes of another man in front of everyone, women and children. He gathered everyone in the village square and beat them. How can we describe an understanding that leaves a Kurd mother-naked saying that he is pro- PKK . They cannot be the soldier of Ataturk. The name of this was not the fight against terrorism, the name of this was betrayal. I saw warplanes being used against these people (Kurds). You are using artilleries, tanks, mines against the people. The fire is going to burn all of us. We made these people to eat sh...t. We took off their nails, forbidden their language, and we have done all these. But I am requesting from Kurdish people not to disrespect our flag, you should be the one at least who is defending it. This flag mostly needs Kurds. Kurdish people are our honour, backbone and pride. We need to apologise from Kurds...Now mass graves are being found everywhere. Whether you call them guerrilla or terrorist... These mass graves are the shame of this country."
"Terrible things experienced in that region. We went there in 1986. One year later, there took place a massacre in the Pinarcik Village of Mardin-Omerli. 16 of them children, 30 people were killed. I went to that village, everywhere was full of blood and gun powder smell. Pinarcik massacre was carried out by groups formed by JITEM aiming provocation. 30 people, including children... A dead body of a child was in my arms. (Carkin cries..). The organisation did not kill those people. It was somebody else who shed the blood. Basbaglar massacre, Bilan incident, Jave villages...The same team carried out all these. Basbaglar massacre is definitely a product of the logic of Ergenekon."
"I am not going to flee anywhere. I promise on my honour that I will go and explain everything if the commission to investigate truths suggested by Ocalan formed. I swear that I will tell them, the ones who betrayed to this country."
(Question: Was there extra-judicial killings during the operations that you participated) "Yes, there was. If this blood was shed, it was shed by the state. Can anybody shed blood without the permission of the state?"
"I was in the all raids carried out in Istanbul. A girl was dead during Perpa raid, she was executed. I was in the armed clash at that moment. There was another Ayhan therem he shot the girl. I was there in the Sabahat Karatas incident (Ciftehavuzlar). I was beside Ibrahim Sahin. I signed my name in the armed clash in Bahcelievler. 15 people were killed there. I am ready to pay the cost if I made mistake. But whoever gives the order, he is the murderer. I am disgusted from these incidents."
Now I go crazy when I see the current state of Ibrahim Sahin, who was chairing us at that period. He is after getting a report from Forensic Medicine. As if he is having loss of memory! We were praying before entering his room. Look at the situation he is in know! You cannot deceive me Ibrahim Sahin. You cannot hide behind that madness report you going to get. Because he bears all the answers. Mehmet Agar should also come out and give account."
The confessions of Carkin once more revealed the direct role of state cadres such as Mehmet Agar, former Home Office Minister, and Ibrahim Sahin, former head of Special Operations Deparment, in the extra-judicial killings and JITEM massacres which were shown as armed clash by the murderer Turkish bourgeoisie state and blamed on PKK or other revolutionary organisations. Many such claims were presented to the public opinion through bourgeoisie media during Ergenekon operations. Many murderer state cadres, including retired generals, police chiefs, MIT counsellors, have given "confessions" to the media. And Nurhan Yorulmaz, mother of a special operations police officer Oguz Yorulmaz, made the following statement: "The state has made my son and his friends to carry out all the extra-judicial killings. Not only generals but also politicians are also involved in Ergenekon. I gave my son as a civil serviceman to the state, but not a gang. They have killed 93-94 people approximately."
The confessions of the Carkin have also activated the revolutionary and democratic forces. They applied for a court case against 138 people, including Aykan Carkin, Mehmet Agar, former Home Office Minister, and Necdet Menzir, former Minister, in the Besiktas Court. The Contemporaneous Lawyers Association demanded the reopening of 26 court cases, including Bagcilar Operation, Perpa Execution, Bahcelievler Operation and 12 July Operation.
Carkin was taken into custody on 25 March because of his confessions. Carkin, who was transferred to Istanbul 12th Heavy Penal Court on duty demanding his imprisonment because of crimes of "killing men", was released later.
Carkin was tried before for various cases, including the Susrluk case and the murder of Omer Lutfi Topal, the king of casinos. Carkin, who escaped punishment from the murder cases against revolutionaries, was sent to prison for 291 days in Susurluk Case in 1997. He was also arrested in year 2000 for another gang case and released after one month. Some of the cases against Carkin still continue, but many of them result in not-guilty verdicts or lapse of time.
Until very recently, Carkin was still keeping silent on the same issues and saying "there are no gangs within the state". Carkin, who said "I am proud of my services. Ok, I am dismissed from being police officer, they kick me out, but I do not care" in year 2002, today touches on the same issues and says "We made these people to eat sh...t. We need to apologise from Kurds...I promise on my honour that I will go and explain everything if the commission to investigate truths suggested by Ocalan formed. I swear that I will tell about them, the ones who betrayed to this country." The reason of this change from Carkin has not came to clear yet, whether it comes from regret or the clique clashes within the Turkish colonial fascist bourgeoisie that is experiencing a split on the way to follow regarding the Kurdish question.
For the revolutionary and democratic forces, Carkin's confessions present important data in terms of the trial of coup and dirty-war crimes of fascism.
