May 18 is the anniversary of the death of Ibrahim Kaypakkaya, one of the leading revolutionaries of the 1970s. Many events of commemoration were carried out at various locations in Turkey and Northern Kurdistan and thousands of young people took to the streets to remind him. Kaypakkaya was arrested as a result of an armed conflict where he was wounded and later was killed under torture in the State Prison of Diyarbakir. Along with Kaypakkaya, actions and events of commemoration are being realised for Haki Karer, one of the founders of the PKK and Ferhat Kurtay, Esref Anyik, Mahmut Zengin and Necmi Oner, who had burnt themselves in the Prison of Diyarbakir after the 1980 military coup to protest the torture.
