We believe that the HDK can contribute to the rise of an antifascist-anti-imperialist and anti-colonialist front in the democratic field that will grow the basis of a united mass movement, despite its limitation of not including many important forces of the revolutionary movement and being restricted to certain political means of struggle.

On October 15-16, a new platform of united struggle of the peoples of Turkey and Northern Kurdistan has been founded in Ankara under the slogan "We are uniting!" The initiative, which adopted the name "People's Democratic Congress" (HDK) and involves important progressive, revolutionary and Kurdish forces such us SDP , EMEP , BDP , ESP , trade unions like KESK and many other initiatives, associations, parties and movements against all kind of repression, exploitation and discrimination, aims to "unite all oppositional sectors under one roof".
825 delegates from different regions and ethnical and religious origins like Turkish, Kurdish, Laz, Assyrian, Alevi, Arabic, Armenian, Circassian, Georgian, Nusayri, Roman, Greek, Pomak, African, Yezidi gathered at the congress in order to unite in the various struggles of the workers, the women, the youth, in the struggle for a just peace and a democratic solution of the Kurdish question, against the ecological destruction and any kind of political, religious, ethnical or sexual discrimination, oppression and exploitation.
The two-day congress, where also many M.P.s of the "Labour, Democracy and Freedom Block", intellectuals and artists were present, discussed the draft statutes and programme of the initiative, details of their aims and areas of struggle and took a general decision of becoming a political party, giving the task to the Congress Assembly. The General Congress Assembly, the highest managing body, which will meet every 6 month and consists of 121 members, was elected at the congress.
In the past, several attempts and initiatives of united election blocks, unities of action and other forms of alliances took place. However, until now they have all been limited to a certain purpose, time or topic. This time, the forces forming the People's Democratic Congress seek for a more comprehensive and long-term coordination. Furthermore, they do not want to limit themselves with protest and chronic opposition but develop alternatives of the peoples themselves.
In Turkey, the Kurdish question is always one of the key topics of the political agenda. Whereas the Kurdish freedom movement is organised and politicised and has a high national conscious, the situation in Turkey is different. While the Kurdish freedom movement is fighting determinately for its legitimate democratic rights and freedom of the Kurdish people and reached out its hands innumerable times to the Turkish people, the poison of chauvinism continuously spread by the bourgeois Turkish state and its AKP government unfortunately does not fail its effect. However, whereas a nation oppresses another it will never be free and a unity is only possible on the fundament of real equality. This is one of the most important reasons of the situation of the resistances and struggles in the West which are quite dispersed and disunited in terms of agendas, forms of struggle and places. There is a great lack of solidarity and unity between the strikes in different workplaces, between the democratic movements of different sectors such as the students, women, Alevis and others and beyond all, between these struggles and the revolutionary organisations. The People's Democratic Congress is an initiative to deeply change the relations among the progressive Turkish forces and the Kurdish freedom movement, to establish an alliance of all oppressed peoples and parts of the society on the basis of equality, fraternity and freedom.
The programme of our party MLCP is based on the united revolution of the workers and labourers of the West and the Kurdish nation, and considers the unity of these two struggles as the most important strategic question of the revolution in the country. In order to grow the mass base of such strategy, we have always strived for a more consistent and comprehensive front of the oppressed and exploited masses, going beyond the temporary alliances focused on certain agendas. We believe that the HDK can contribute to the rise of an antifascist-anti-imperialist and anti-colonialist front in the democratic field that will grow the basis of a united mass movement, despite its limitation of not including many important forces of the revolutionary movement and being restricted to certain political means of struggle.
