The Coordination against War in Iraq, of which ESP is amongst the constituents, has marched from Istanbul to Incirlik Air Base (Adana) on 26-27-28 August demanding the closure of the Base.

On the 20th of August, public meetings were organised in several cities and it was called on people to attend the march in order to reckon with the imperialists and their collaborators. It was said: "We do not want Incirlik Air Base, in which the imperialists' war vehicles and army is planted, in our country. We are marching towards Incirlik Base in order to salute the resisting peoples of the world against imperialism, occupation and the collaborationist and oppressive politics of the state".

Setting off in Istanbul on the 26th of August with the slogan of "Close Incirlik Base", approximately 300 people called at Gebze, Izmit, Bursa, Eskisehir, Ankara, Konya and Mersin, and terminated in Incirlik with 750 people on the 28th of August.

Blocking B-100 motorway to traffic and chanting anti-imperialist slogans such as "Close Incirlik Base", "Murderer USA Out of the Middle East" and "Long Live Peoples' Brotherhood", the anti-occupation group was met by the police barricade on their way marching towards the base. Reading a press release at the check point, the marchers said: "We came to Incirlik setting off in 22 cities and passing city by city. We came here because we demand the closure of the base. We came here because we want to say 'clear off' to the USA who murdered tens of thousands of people in Afghanistan, Palestine, Iraq and several other parts of the world. The Incirlik Base is a military base where, during its history, plans have been made that have led to the murder of peoples of the Middle East. Having opened the Sakirpasa Airport to the use of NATO, the collaborators have expanded the usage authorities of the base. We came here to say that the people have a word and power against all these".

During the march it was said that "this action has organised and increased a united struggle. The anti-imperialist struggle has been taken over from Deniz Gezmis, Mahir Cayan and Ibrahim Kaypakkaya, who were the symbols of the anti-imperialist struggle in the past.

The anti-imperialist struggle takes its roots from the past experiences of the 1968 youth struggle against the NATO bases. The oust of the USA's 6th fleet from Istanbul has a special influence on the anti-imperialist struggle. Today, the anti-imperialist march towards the Incirlik Base has formed a concrete example of solidarity with the resisting forces of Iraq against imperialism.
