On 14 September, the Social Forum in Turkey (SFT) declared its foundation in following words: "We, as the ones who take part in the process of Social Forum in Turkey, call upon everyone to support this call and join in the process of SFT in order to create a network of social movements and to strengthen our capability of struggle."
Trade Unions and Union Chambers such as DISK (Confederation of Revolutionary Workers Unions), KESK (Confederation of Public Sector Labourers' Union), TMMOB (Unions of the Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects), democratic mass organisations such as IHD (Human Rights Association), various parties and organisations are among the founders. The question of considering an organisation perspective on the basis of the realities of Turkey and Northern Kurdistan was among the subjects that come fore during the preparatory meetings of Social Forum in Turkey. "Regional Imperialist Projects (EU-Greater Middle Eastern Project) and Turkey", Neo-liberal Attacks (Privatisation) -Education, health, housing", "The Kurdish Question", "Democracy and 12 September", "Nationalism" and "Human Rights, Torture, Disappearances and Prisons" were among the other debated themes.
And on 23-25 September, the preparatory meeting of the European Social Forum -which will be organised in 2006 in Athens- also took place in Istanbul. The attitude on the EU was the most debated item of the agenda. Two different circles led by Communist Party (Re-foundation) in Italy and COBAS; ATTAC, Communist Party of France and the Revolutionary Communist League -who are in the line of European Left Party- putted forward the idea of reformation of EU, other organisations such as ESP (Socialist Platform of Oppressed), HOC (Rights and Freedoms Front) from Turkey and the Communist Organisation of Greece carried an anti-imperialist and revolutionary air to the meeting. In his speech, the representative of ESP said that EU is the union of the capital, it is a tool for imperialist rivalry and it is necessary that European Social Forum should not become the left wing of the European Union.
After the proposals of ESP and ILPS, the theme of "Policies of Security and Repression", Europe's political repression such as the new anti-terror laws has been defined as one of the main themes of the coming ESF.
The next ESF Preparatory Meeting is going to be organised on 5-8 January in Vienna.
