TOWARDS IMPERIALIST SOLUTION IN CYPRUS!

In every period of the history, Cyprus has always become very important for the occupying powers because of its strategic position. And the reason of today's storm that has broken out upon the Cyprus island is nothing else than because of its strategic position. As the last few decades, more correctly, the developments after the occupation of some part of the Island by the Turkish army show, the Island is wanted to be redesigned in accordance with the imperialist policies of the hegemonic forces. In this period, the ball for the solution of the question is passed from UN to EU and EU to UN, and Greece and Turkey who both wanted to have a word on the Island have tried to defend their "annexation" and "dividing" policies in accordance with the day's conditions on each time.

Until today, the two colonial forces (Turkey and Greece) in the Island have been able to continue with the de facto division of the island by leaning on the two imperialist powers (EU and USA).

The American imperialism will not give up from the Cyprus island because of the necessity of its Eurasia geo-politics; strategy on the world sovereignty. The EU is also considering Cyprus as a springboard of its imperialist expansionism.

Until today, Greece had been shaping its annexation policy in line with the understanding of that it could realize it by the Island's entrance to the EU and by keeping Turkey outside the EU. The EU imperialists have also supported the policy of Greece because the membership of Cyprus to the EU means that it could come out of the American influence. On the contrary to this, Turkey has tried to make its "dividing" policy to be accepted since the beginning. This policy has been also supported by the USA despite some disagreements on time to time. Because, even in the case of the Island's membership to the EU, the USA was planning to be a dominating power at least in the Turkish side of the island.

But the situation has changed in the last few years. Turkey's acceptance as a candidate country for membership of the EU, taking steps to become a member, inevitability of having a final decision on the subject of Turkey's membership to the EU in the near future and, at the same time, bringing Annan Plan into agenda in order to solve Cyprus question and insistence on the plan have caused to reshuffling of the cards, making of new accounts and creation of new politics in Cyprus.

The Annan Plan is foreseeing a federative structure for both sides (nations) in the Island. This plan is prepared in accordance with the imperialist interests but not in the interests of the peoples in Island. The Annan Plan is an imperialist solution and it expresses an agreement between the USA and EU. In fact, non of the sides are happy with the plan.

In the circles of the Annan Plan, the American imperialism is not going to loose a lot of its influence upon the island even in the situation of Cyprus's membership to the EU. The USA can have a word in the island upon the UK's military bases in the island and Turkey's continuing rights of being a guarantor. But it can also realize its imperialist policies in the Island and the region through countries those who are member of the EU but taking side with the USA by their pro-American policies.

The elections, which took place in the Turkish side of the Island on 14 December, showed that half of the voters are on the side of continuity of the status quo and the other half is on the side of the change of the status quo. Therefore, this election has shown that at least half of the voters are seeking the change and are approving the Annan Plan. The election has also carried a significance of being a referendum on the Annan Plan.

The election results have one more time revealed the different views on the "solution" between Denktas, who is on the side of continuity of traditional policy, and the opposition, who is on the side of the Annan Plan. The results have revealed differences between the army and the government in Turkey also. Denktas and, basically, the Army are on the side of continuity of the status quo. The Turkish government is saying that the Annan Plan can be accepted as a base in the negotiations. Opposition in Cyprus is also on the same point of view. In any case, even in the circles of the Annan Plan, the Turkish side is making Cyprus as the subject of negotiations for entering the EU.

Both Turkey and Greece and the imperialist powers; USA and EU, all of them are responsible for the de facto division of the Island because of their policies that implemented until today. And they almost put people in the Island into a position which they can not live together anymore. But, as if nothing had happened until today, now they are forcing both peoples in the Island to live together. The Annan Plan, this imperialist solution, is a direct expression of this forcing. Because, the Island's real owners, the Turkish and Greek peoples' views have not been taken during the preparation of the plan. Yet, the lasting solution, the real solution for both Greek and Turkish toilers must take both peoples' volunteer unification as the base. The expression of a lasting solution can only be the independent united Cyprus that takes full equality of the both sides as the base. And only the wills of the Turkish and Greek Cypriot peoples can determine what shape the independent united Cyrus state will take.

We, as MLCP, support the Cyprus peoplesB4 struggle on this direction and firmly oppose to Cyprus to be used as a tool in the imperialist politics.
