The crisis that quickly developed after the presidential elections on June 12, 2009 in Iran between the two parties of the ruling classes has continued with the same severity.
What has continued at the same time is the oppression and violence against those fighting for freedom and their rights, the opposition. Execution is at the top of this oppression and violence. Only for 2009, the number of those executed is estimated to be around 266.
Since 1977, workers and labourers, oppressed women and students haven't been as active to intervene in politics as in June 2009. Nearly half a million Iranians went on the streets shouting slogans to protest electoral fraud. Women actively participated in these mass actions shouting the slogans "No to covering women by force" and "No to Islamic Monarchy". By that, they showed that they have developed an important political conscious and that they are ready to fight against the dictatorship regime's oppression and for freedom. The biggest street clashes took place in last December when 10,000s went on the streets. On the Asure Day, which is of the most holy holiday of the Shiites, 8 people died in clashes between oppositional reformists and the police. This is only the official number. 40& of the protesters were women. On the actions of the "Student's Day" that take place every year on December 8, thousands of students gathered at Teheran University and other universities demanding scientific and democratic education. The police attacked the actions with gas bombs, shot on the students and arrested them.
It is suggested that around 70 people were killed in the clashes since June 2009, among them 5 people who were executed.
The Kurdish nation is another group that has continuously oppressed and attacked by the Iranian regime. The execution as a type of penalty given one after another to the Kurdish political prisoners hasn't stopped to be an important point on the agenda. 20 Kurdish prisoners have been sentenced to death by execution so far. Among them, there is 27-year old Zeynep Celaliyan.
Zeynep Celaliyan became the target of the Iranian regime due to her identity as a woman and as a Kurd. Zeynep Celaliyan, fighter for the liberation of woman, was sentenced to death on January 14, 2009 in a 7 minutes lasting trial accused to have "stood up against Allah". Celaliyan wrote a letter letting the whole world know the oppression she has suffered and called on the women's organisations:
"I am a 27-year-old Kurdish woman and I am a political prisoner behind bars in Iran. My death sentence was confirmed by the Iranian Supreme Court. I am currently living under worst conditions. I was badly tortured. The trial that took place was like a show. I didn't have a lawyer to defend me and the trial took only a few minutes before I was sentenced to death. The judge told me: "You are Allah's enemy; soon you will be sentenced to death like all enemies of Allah." All judges voted in favour of my execution. I asked for the permission to say good bye to my mum and my family. The judge told me "to shut up" and rejected my wish. I ask all human right defenders and women to stand up against the injustice I faced and to help me."
Women's organisations from different countries have started to carry out actions to stop the execution of Kurdish fighter Celaliyan. Celaliyan's letter was published in many newspapers and magazines in different languages. However, the solidarity shown, the signature campaigns, the statements and actions didn't manage to stop the execution. The struggle for the freedom of Celaliyan is a duty of all progressive, revolutionary, socialist women's organisations and political forces. Our party MLCP calls on the progressive, revolutionary and communist forces to raise the demand for Celaliyan's freedom.
