01 August / Internationale Bulletin / No. 142 In these presidential elections the president will be elected directly by the people for the first time. Minister-president Erdoğan prepared this event with constitutional changes, that shall serve as preparation for the transition to a presidential government form. Propably as a second step a new bourgeois constitution was to be prepared, in which the president would centralize a lot of competences. This second step has not been taken. Now they plan to use „presidential election“ as some sort of legitimization for the situation created and for the transition to the presidential government form. The elections will be realized on 10th August. There are three candidates. More candidates were not possible because only parties that at least have 20 Members of Parliament may name candidates for the presidential election. This is an obstacle comparable to the 10% minimum in the parlamentary election. The three candidates that line up actually only represent two contradictional fronts. AKP 's candidate minister-president Erdoğan as well as the common candidate of CHP and MHP , Ekmeleddin Ihsanoğlu, generally form part of the same political tendency. Only in some details they differ. Ihsanoğlu has a even more nationalist line than Erdoğan. This reactionary-fascist front is confronted by Selahattin Demirtaş, who is the candidate of HDK - HDP , representing the progressive and opressed forces at this election. The campaign for Demirtaş represents the diversity of people and religious beliefs as well as a democratic and social programme for the labouring classes. It has a significant influence among the parts of people, that are alienated by the chauvinist-reactionary ideology and the capitalist indivualism. It is a common alternative of the labouring and opressed classes and an opposite pole to the reactionary and fascist forces. This opposite pole was created by the mass work, which was deepened and broadened during the campaign. The elections are a new opportunity to prepare the broader masses for the mass movement. Furthermore the democratical front offers a possibility to fight chauvinism and hostility against Kurds among the Turkish labouring masses. For this reason it is an important opportunity to increase the number of democratical forces. AKP government smelt this opportunity just as a greedy dog and provoked its fascist forces to carry out lynch attacks. In the Black Sea region fascist forces tried to attack work and cadres of the democratical front. Lately in a neighbourhood of Istanbul armed radical-islamist forces of the AKP government attacked HDP offices. Many comrades were injured. For them this is an act of revenge against those who defend the Rojava Revolution with heart and body. At the same time it is a sign for the conversion of the islamist conservative forces into paramilitarian fascist forces of the Erdoğan-Dictatorship against the June Uprising. The democratical front's forces supporting Demirtaş learn to transmit the contents of their agitation and propaganda in simple people's language. The cadres and sympathizers that lead this campaign learn to explain their demands and programme in simple words. This is also possible because besides Demirtaş HDP president Figen Yüksekdağ, HDP cadres and many new voluntary working activists participate in the election campaign. HDP broadens, gathers experiences in the mass work as well as in the application of simple language when it comes to agitation and propaganda. The electoral campaign and HDP's fight are also a chance and the hope to keep the forces that participated in the June Uprising vivid. It's also of great importance because many people think in a simplistic way 'Doesn't matter who as long as it's not Erdoğan' and fall into despair. The consequent democratic alternative and their campaign lead to the strengthening of the democratical forces and their hopes. The context the elections will be realized in is a context of a reactionary Sunnite-Shiite fight, which overshadows the whole region, but on the other side the Rojava Revolution is also defended consequently and plays the role of an alternative for the people of the region. The AKP government supported by the imperialist forces, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates tries to help the reactionary Sunnite advances along, to prevent their policy in the region from failing. To abolish the Rojava Revolution they sent their islamist-reactionary forces to war. The democratical front is a force that defends the revolution in Rojava, it forms part of the democratical and antiimperialist forces in the Region. It contributes to the consolidation of the democratic forces in the upcoming months. During the election campaign it will defend its forces, enlarge its influence and extend the struggle in the region. There is hope because there is a democratical front, because there is HDP.
